Understanding Engagement Rate

What is Engagement Rate?

Engagement rate measures how actively your audience interacts with your content. It's calculated by dividing total engagements (likes + comments + saves) by your follower count or reach, then multiplying by 100.

Follower-Based vs. Reach-Based

Follower-based divides the entered interactions by your follower count; it does not show which followers engaged. Reach-based uses accounts reached as the denominator. Neither rate is a percentage of unique people who interacted: one person can like, comment, and save.

Why Include Saves?

Saves are a useful signal of intent, but Instagram does not publish a fixed multiplier that applies to every post. Include saves when you have them, and compare like-for-like metrics across your own posts.

Benchmarks by Account Size

Smaller accounts typically see higher engagement rates because their audiences can be more concentrated. The ranges in this calculator are illustrative, vary by source, niche, format, and calculation method, and are not live Instagram data or a performance promise.
